Tampa 2008 Conference, discussing the shifts we're currently experiencing in global awareness and what the effect of reaching 2012 (or thereabouts - this really seems more to me to be a process, not a specific date) is most likely to be. (In 2 parts.)

I think another factor, not discussed in that brief segment, that we are also seeing is the rise of female-energy-based power and awareness. The governments of the world have been generally organized and ruled by men for thousands of years, but this is clearly changing. And I think as women's perspectives become more and more integrated into how the world will be organized and operated we will see a sea-change in the way that societies conduct themselves, including how minorities are treated, how food and medicine are distributed, even how wealth is distributed, and so forth.

In many ways, I think that the big outbursts of energy that we are seeing these days from male-dominated segments, including religious and business organizations, represent a kind of "death-throe." Not that these things (like male-dominated religious groups or the industrial-military complex) will ever completely go away, but that they are recognizing that their days of dominance are coming to an end, and that change is inevitable.

War is not the only way of dealing with people with different beliefs and ideologies. Rapacious greed can hurt nations and generations, and even cause global economic collapse. These simply aren't clever ways of operating from the big-picture point of view.

And it is time for new energies to arise. And I think we, as Lightworkers, will be part of facilitating that process.

Many Americans haunted by ghosts, look to astrology

DALLAS (Reuters Life!) – Although most Americans are Christian and many are devout it hasn't stopped some members of the flock from believing in astrology, reincarnation or the ability of trees to trap spiritual energy.

A poll by the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life shows a surprising number of U.S. adults claim to have had supernatural experiences such as ghost sightings or hold beliefs associated with the New Age movement or Eastern religions.

And some of them claim allegiance to more traditional faiths such as Catholicism or evangelical Protestantism.

"American religious folks hold a variety of views and there is overlap among their beliefs and practices. Many do not fit into simple boxes," said Pew researcher Alan Cooperman.

The poll released on Wednesday showed that three-in-ten Americans say they have felt in touch with a dead person and 18 percent say they have seen or been in the presence of a ghost.

Other Pew surveys have shown that relatively few Americans would identify an Eastern religion or New Age spirituality as their core faith. But about a quarter of those surveyed say they believe in aspects of Eastern religions.

Nearly 25 percent said they believed in reincarnation and 23 percent said yoga was a spiritual practice. Twenty six percent said they believed "spiritual energy" could be found in objects such as trees.

A quarter said they believed in astrology, while 16 percent of U.S. adults think that an "evil eye" exists or that some people can cast curses or spells on others. Among black Protestants the evil eye figure is 32 percent.

The number of Americans who profess a belief in astrology is about the same as the number who claim to be Roman Catholic. Nearly 30 percent of Catholics surveyed said they believed in astrology. Among Catholics who attended church each week the figure was 16 percent.

Much of this would be jarring to -- among others -- many evangelical Protestants, who account for one in four adult Americans and take their Bible very seriously.

Still, 13 percent of white evangelicals profess a belief in astrology and about 10 percent accepted the possibility of reincarnation. Although the percentages are lower than in other groups, they are high enough to curl the hair of a Southern Baptist preacher.

Researchers said they were careful to stress that reincarnation meant being reborn again and again in this world and did not refer to, say, the resurrection of Christ.

Evangelicals, who place a heavy emphasis on spiritual conversions, are much more likely than most Americans to have had "a religious or mystical experience -- that is, a moment of religious or spiritual awakening," according to the poll.

About half of Americans claim to have had such an experience but among white evangelicals the number is 70 percent and for black Protestants it is 71 percent.

The nationwide survey of around 4,000 adults was conducted in August. Interviews were done in English and Spanish.

Thanks again for visiting my blog! You are very welcome here!

I've had a number of discussions with people recently regarding service - helping other people and/or the community. And it seems that the more service I do, the better my life gets. So I am very quick to recommend it.

But I'm not the only one who feels this way - in fact, I'm rather late to the game. Many other people, people a lot smarter and more influential than me, have made this discovery themselves. Well, we're moving on from the Golden Circle. Lots of great folks and good things going on there, but the Church of Lightworkers is once again looking for a home.

One of the issues for me that came up was the amount of time required for what we were doing and the labor and money investments necessary to keep everything rolling along. I was sometimes there 5-6 days a week (aside from my daytime job), and putting all my discretionary cash into it, and I just wasn't able to get much else done. I was too busy producing events and services and classes there to properly promote and market them.

I have some good leads for new places and hope to be able to let you know what will be happening soon. It will probably be a lot less activity - perhaps just one service per month, but we'll make that one service a great one well worth attending. Unfortunately, we won't be doing the SpiritFest Fair originally planned for December, but we should have that event back on track by February.

In the meantime, I have my first Sunday off in about 4 months, and I am enjoying it very much!

A dove named Precious has a fatty tumor that makes it hard for Precious to move or breathe as it grows. Normally, her caretaker Mandy, who regularly attends the services of the Church of Lightworkers, has to take her to the vet to have the tumor drained (at a cost of $140 each time). At services last Sunday, we all sent healing energy to Precious, and afterwards healers worked on her and kept sending her energy. She suddenly began draining the fluid from her tumor all by herself! Manifesting

Hello!

The senior minister over at Golden Circle, Dr. David Laughray, is currently doing a 9-week course on how we can manifest prosperity and abundance into our lives. It's always good to review these things, especially in the current economy.

Along with my friend Suzan I used to teach a course on this, and there are a couple things I think people should keep in mind for successful manifesting. "The Secret" only touched on the basics - there is MUCH more involved in mastering the art of manifesting.

* Most of the people who came to the class were lying about what they wanted to manifest - not to me, but to themselves. They said they wanted to manifest "X" into their lives but their lives were full of "Y". Remember, we are ALREADY master manifestors. They were proactively (although possibly subconsciously) busy manifesting "Y" instead of "X." If we want to manifest something different into our lives, then we need to choose a different way of thinking - a way that manifests "X" instead of "Y."

* While we can manifest things without doing a lot of "work," per se, we must remain open to change. In order for manifesting to succeed, we need to change our energies to become the kind of person that attracts the desired manifestation. A classic example of how not to do manifesting is the person who wins the lottery or otherwise comes into a lot of money, blows through it quickly, and within a couple of years or so has returned to their previous financial condition. These people retain their old energy, and so when the money comes it passes through their lives like a rainstorm and is gone.

* There are always models for whatever you want to manifest into your life. Find those people, hang around with them, pick up on their energies, learn their secrets. Match their vibrations and you will attract whatever it is that they attract.

* Put reminders all around you of what you have learned about that which you wish to manifest. In your home, your office, your car, whatever - surround yourself with that energy all the time.

Nice synchronicity

Golden Circle has been through the fire in the last couple of years, particularly with a couple of lawsuits from old members trying to impose their views and wishes on the congregation. Really sad - and expensive!

So anyways, the symbolism that has kept coming to my mind with regard to Golden Circle has been the Phoenix - the fabled giant ancient bird with multi-colored wings that lived for a thouand years, then built a nest of myrrh sticks scented with frankincense that caught on fire and destroyed the old bird, and then from the ashes of the fire the new bird arose.

So Saturday night I was looking at the entry on Wikipedia on the Phoenix, to re-acquaint myself with the story.

Now move forward to Sunday morning, the daytime services, and we had the Clementine Band (link) playing during the service. They played all their favorites, and we all had a great time.

Then after the service, as people were leaving the sanctuary, I heard the band playing and Jannel singing "by the time I get to Phoenix," with Dana singing as a chorus the words "she'll be rising" over and over and over again. You could have knocked me over with a feather.

I asked Jannel about it when they stopped and she said that a congregation member had asked her about playing the old Glenn Campbell hit "By the Time I Get to Phoenix" and they were just playing with it a bit but didn't know the whole song.

I don't know about you, but synchronicities like that can totally stagger me. The ways that Spirit manifests can just be so amazing!

SpiritFest Fair

"Illusions: The Adventures of a Reluctant Messiah" is a wonderful 1977 book written by Richard Bach, who also was the author of "Jonathan Livingston Seagull." I happily recommend it. But that's not the topic of this post.

Actually, it's been a very nice kind of week.

A lot of guidances - that I of course followed - but this week I also got some validations, which was nice.

For example, on Wednesday I was guided to take one freeway rather than another, and I subsequently learned that there had been a bad accident on the other freeway, so if I had taken it I certainly would have been very badly delayed.

And I have also had a lot of interactions with people in connection with the upcoming SpiritFest Fair, as well as the Church of Lightworkers, and pretty much all of these interactions have validated my own gut feelings regarding how these things are to develop.

So it's been kind of interesting.

And I'm feeling very good about trusting my intuitive/psychic feelings.

Parallel Universes

“Parallel Universes” was a 2001 documentary produced by the BBC's Horizon series. The documentary has to do with parallel universes, string theory, M theory, supergravity, and other theoretical physics concepts. Participants include Michio Kaku, Paul Steinhardt, and other physicists.

TEL AVIV The office door has a steel vault veneer, and Shari Arison -- controlling stockholder in Israel's largest bank and its largest construction company, heiress to the Carnival Cruise Lines fortune and head of a long list of other undertakings -- has a lot to protect.

And as with any proper vault, this one is full of surprises.

Fairy figurines fill a knickknack shelf, and paintings of fairies hang from the soft-toned walls. Statues of dolphins leap from a cream-colored carpet, and goldfish gurgle in a tank just behind a chair. A yard-long see-through candleholder with a dozen flickering votives is angled across Arison's desk, looking like it connects to Kabbalah or the Upanishads or Area 51 or Something Larger Than Us, but which she says is there just because.

But the biggest jolt comes from the woman in the executive chair: Arison -- billionaire ($2.7 by Forbes's most recent estimate), perhaps the richest woman in the Middle East, a major force in Israeli philanthropy -- claims that she can see the future.

This is much bigger than a parlor trick. In her new book published this summer in Israel, the 51-year-old Miami native says she felt the Indonesian tsunami sweeping over the land two months before it happened and sensed Hurricane Katrina pummeling New Orleans. In an interview, Arison says she also "saw the writing on the wall" before the global economic crash.

It turns out peaceful thoughts really can influence our bodies, right down to the instructions we receive from our DNA, according to a new study.

Researchers for the study, published in the Public Library of Science, took blood samples from a group of 19 people who habitually meditated or prayed for years, and 19 others who never meditated.

The researchers ran genomic analyses of the blood and found that the meditating group suppressed more than twice the number of stress-related genes -- about 1,000 of them -- than the nonmeditating group.

Fear is entirely based on illusions. When we let go of the fear, we can lose ourselves in love, and spiritually gather in the richest and most abundant harvest.

Simplifying Life's Purpose

Life is truly not so complicated.

We may do our best to try to make it appear complicated ("hmm, the red shoes with the silver purse, or the black shoes with the gold purse?"), but that's just playing into our inner goofiness.

The truth is, our purpose in life is to find who/what we love, and then love it. (And if people have trouble doing that, be aware that they're letting fear get in the way, and we can just let go of that fear. Once we let go of all fear, then we can purely and joyously experience love.)

So just find those particular people, those things, that place, that mode of creative expression, that job - whatever - that totally rock your world and make you feel all butterflies and giddy inside, and give them all the love you can. Forget shyness, forget formalities, forget all the silliness ("but how could this possibly work? He has two dogs, I have two cats . . ."), and just let your feelings of love lead you to a life full of blessings.

And when you do that, you'll find that there really isn't enough time in our short lives to write all the love songs that we need to write (and by "writing love songs" I mean expressing our love and our gratitude for love, whether that be by actual songs, or dancing, or deeply heartfelt whispers, or picking up after someone else, or the million and one other ways we can express our love and gratitude).

Search your world, find what you love, and devote your life to expressing that love. That's all you need to do.

Isn't that simple? I think so.

Catching Up

Things have been very busy, as I'm sure you've guessed, what with getting the church services and related events rolling, but everything is really starting to fit into place now and I hope you'll be joining us soon.

To sum up what's going on:

On Sunday evenings at 6:00 pm we hold the regular Church of Lightworkers services. These mainly consist of beautiful, spiritual music and interesting, mind-opening guided meditations.

We also do short "billet readings," which are kind of psychic mini-readings. (Here's the process if you're not familiar with it: Each person attending gets a paper ticket and hold it and puts their energy into it, and then puts half the ticket into a basket and keeps the other half. When we do the readings the reader will pull the tickets randomly from the basket and give the impressions that they get, which may include insights into the ticket holder's personal situation, visions of future events, and so forth.)

We also usually have a gift basket filled with goodies that is awarded by draw to some lucky person attending the service!

Then after the service we move to the meeting room and share potluck snacks and social time. It all makes for a very pleasant and enjoyable evening. There's no fee for services, of course, but we do pass the plate for love offerings.

Then on (most) Mondays we have classes and workshops in conjunction with the Meetup group. First and third Mondays each month are for classes (usually some form of spiritual or psychic development), and then the second and fourth Mondays are devoted to practice workshops where we get to practice and develop our skills and abilities. These are generally scheduled to begin at 7:00, and fees usually range from about $10-20 or so. Check the Meetup group schedules for the exact topics, fees, times, etc.

Then on Fridays we have a meditation group, where we experience very enjoyable and deep meditative states for about an hour. Love offering of $10 per person requested, but no one will be turned away for lack of funds for this event.

Other stuff coming up: once a month meetings for the Professional Lightworkers group, where we'll focus on how to best succeed at the business side of Lightworking, spiritual cinema and potluck events, occasional fairs, special speaker nights, and much more!

A New Age Has Begun

Wow! Such wonderful things are happening.

I had a long meeting with the senior minister and the president of the Board at the Golden Circle Church today, and that beautiful community is welcoming our energy and our events. We talked a lot about ideas and possibilities, as well as committing to specific things for right now, and I am very excited about the potentials for growth and deep spiritual connections, not only for the organizations but for all of us individually as well. I look forward to sharing so much with you about this as we move forward into what appears to me to be an awesome and amazing future.

OK, as to specifics: first I want to share that Golden Circle Church (location details below) is one of the specially designated nationwide United Centers for Spiritual Living, and they are most supportive of our spiritual and metaphysical development and celebration efforts. This is a very spiritual place, with very spiritual people. And so it is a great blessing that we will be able to hold all of our classes, workshops, services, and other regular events at that facility.

The Church of Lightworkers, the “umbrella” organization, will begin holding regular weekly services starting on Sunday, June 14, 2009. Services will be from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., with fellowship and light potluck food afterwards in the social hall. The services are designed to be a kind of “spiritual spa,” to spiritually cleanse, nurture, and empower us to confidently go forward into the new week ahead.

Spiritual/psychic development classes will be held on Monday evenings twice a month, on the first and third Mondays, in connection with the OC Intuition/Psychic Fun Meetup Group.

On the second and fourth Mondays we will have practice workshops, where we can practice and develop our psychic and energy healing skills.

Then on Friday evenings we will have a meditation/spiritual awareness development meeting, where you can come join us for restoring and centering and balancing your spiritual energies after the long workweek.

Finally, on the third Thursdays of each month, we will have the Professional Lightworkers Meetup Group meeting for networking and developing business skills and resources, and to learn exactly how best and most effectively to market and grow our lightwork-based businesses and careers.

Many other things are also being discussed, including regular spiritual fairs, celebrity speaker presentations, weekday book discussion and meditation groups, a childrens’ meditation and spiritual empowerment group, combined church picnics/barbecues, and much more.

Truly, a new age is dawning right here in Orange County. Please join us and be a part of it all!

Great News! We Have A New Home!

Wow!

This was definitely a Spirit-guided connection. I'll have more details in a couple of days, but suffice it to say that we have found a beautiful, spiritual place, with a caring community that is opening its arms to us, where we can have our church services, classes, workshops and other events.

Plus: air-conditioning and plenty of parking, and a clean, well-kept building. This is such an incredible blessing!

I'm just floating on air. Again, give me a couple of days to work out the details and we'll start getting lots of stuff on the schedule right away. A new, spiritual age is definitely dawning, right here in Orange County, California. How cool!

Thanks for dropping by as always. There is SO much going on these days, but mostly busy-stuff that's not particularly interesting. Major and much good stuff is definitely coming, though.

Anyways, I heard a pretty comedic discussion at the fair this Saturday, in which a couple of long-time meditators were comparing their experiences, and - very slightly, but noticeably - trying to one-up each other.

"So you've been doing TM for 34 years? That's great, brother. Yeah, I've been doing it myself for 35 years." (That is - one year longer than you!)

Wow. Talk about "not getting it." We need to release the ego, you know? So when one person says, "I've been doing TM for 34 years" we don't scramble to one-up that person, but instead we get into the experience of doing TM for 34 years. This is where the magic is. Experiencing the other person's experience. And when we let go of the ego enough, and can experience the other being's experiences enough, then we can let go and experience being one with all.

Geez, I didn't think this was that complicated. Spiritual oneness is accessible to all of us pretty easily. I just need to stop being me, and you just need to stop being you. Simple, isn't it?

Amazing Beltane Fire Ritual

On Friday, May 1, we conducted a Beltane Fire Ritual with members of the Orange County Local Chapter (OCLC) of the Covenant of the Goddess national Wicca organization (website) at the Learning Light, and it was an absolutely amazing experience.

Beltane is one of the four "fire festivals" celebrated in earth-based spiritual traditions such as Wicca, and which focuses on purification, fertility, and the seasonal transition into spring and the greening of the Earth.

With a blazing fire going in the background, the participants ritually invoked the Goddess and the God, reflected on the significance of May Day and the union of the Goddess and her consort, bringing blessings and fruitfulness to the people and the land. Offerings of cream and honey were made. Everyone then wrote their heart's desire on pieces of paper and then placed them into the fire.

After the completion of the ritual we adjourned to a minor feast of breads, vegetables, eggs, fruit juices, sweets, and other tasty snacks.

I'm sorry, but I did not get any video of this event, but we'll be having other fire rituals in the near future and I'll try to get some footage then.

But it was an really fabulous experience, and my great thanks to OCLC for the time and effort they put into producing it. I'm very hopeful that they will join us at the Learning Light again soon.

Catching Up and Coming Up

Hi there!

The busy times continue, but much I have to share.

I had a great time at the Professional Lightworkers Meetup on Sunday morning at the Gypsy Den, as usual. Tasty food and even better conversation. So much is going to be happening this year!

Before that, on the evening of Saturday the 25th, I went to the "Ask A Psychic" presentation at the Learning Light, which featured Suzan, Jeri and William. It was the first time we had tried the panel-of-psychics kind of format, but it was well attended and very well received, and everyone seemed to have a great time. Some rough edges need to be smoother as far as how the presentation is made (more microphones, for one thing), but it went really well and we will certainly be doing more of this in the future.

I've been playing with the new video camera (got some good shots Saturday), as well as working on music to accompany videos, and that's all coming really soon, and I feel very good about it.

Coming up: we're doing a Beltane fire ritual on Friday night (7:00-9:00pm), and another Beltane-related event on Saturday from 1:00-3:00pm which is expected to feature making flower garlands and home decorations.

Catching Up

Hi there,

No, I didn't fall off the planet. It's been a very busy time. Lots of changes coming at the Learning Light (so lots of time spent there), plus I got my camera (Flip Ultra, $114 through Amazon) and I've been playing with that and learning about creating background music. We'll be doing lots of videos soon, so you can look forward to lots of fun here those.

The scrying class on Tuesday went very well and we had a lot of fun with that. Several people in the class had some very interesting visions.

Experiences like that - where people with little or no experience in a "magic" art can actually be having great psychic visions with only an hour or so training - convince me that we have really made some big steps forward in the last few decades. Yes, there is much power and wisdom in the old ways, but the new ways have much to add as well. And the combination is truly awesome. Day by day, week by week, we are learning how to more easily access our spiritual abilities and powers. An amazingly powerful and loving light is just beginning to sweep across the land.

"A New Age is Dawning," indeed.

What Does A Lightworker Do?

On this site and on the Church of Lightworkers site I list the types of people that are included in the definition of "Lightworkers," but I don't discuss what it is - exactly - that Lightworkers "do."

So I updated the Church website, and this is what I added:

What does a "Lightworker" do?

Lightworkers can:

Send healing energy to people through their prayers or the spiritual powers that come through them
Become aware of events that will happen in the future, have happened in the past, or are happening right now - even if those events are happening thousands of miles away
Communicate with the spirits of those who have passed on, or have not yet been born
Communicate with the spirits of animals, plants, and other forces on the Earth
Channel the spirits of those on this planet, or from beyond
Counsel others with the wisdom of Spirit
And much, much more!

This is who we "are," and this is what we "do." We serve the Spirit, and we make miracles happen (from the perspective of those who live only in the material world). And we feel very blessed to be in this wonderful flow!

No Loneliness Ever

I ran across an article today that talked about how many people experience loneliness, and the resultant sadness and depression that impacts them.

Frankly, it's a topic I never think about, because my own world is so full of spiritual influences that I know that I am never alone, but always surrounded by positive spirituality. I was reminded of the Disney Pocohontas song below, where she sings about interacting with the spirits of animals, plants, and the land. The more we turn to spiritual forces the more pervasive we find them to be as we discover it's a truly magical and spiritual world!

But it's good for us to remember now and then that so many others don't know the amazing and wonderful world that we really live in, and are trapped by the sad mental limitations of their five senses and the physical world.

Our job as lightworkers includes spreading the word to these folks, and sharing the gifts that we have been so blessed to receive. So go forth and let 'em know! Loneliness is only for those who have not been awakened to the vast spiritual world that surrounds them. We need only open their eyes in order for them to see. Act in love, and love will be the result.

Tim Lott wrote an opinion column on the Times Online (UK) site yesterday that argues that "both scientists and theologians need a new way of understanding God."

Mr. Lott writes: "[T]here can be as much narrow-mindedness in scientific circles as there is in religious circles. Many scientists are not only reluctant to acknowledge that there might be valid forms of knowledge outside the scientific method but blind to the godlike implications of what modern science has revealed to us. Perhaps because new-age 'magical thinkers' have misinterpreted much of the evidence to come up with spurious and irrational conclusions. However, the new-agers are right about one thing. The universe is profoundly weird, and even godlike."

One would think that, if the "new-age 'magical thinkers'" were right about the actual dynamics of the universe, perhaps they might be accorded just a little respect, rather than be treated like fringie weirdos.

[Sigh.]

It seems we are still at the "ridicule" stage. Oh, well, back to Gandhi. "First they ignore you, then they ridicule you, then they fight you, then you win."

However, these techniques will be addressed in workshops I'll be presenting through the Church of Lightworkers, so if you can't make it Sunday it will be offered again in one form or another. Workshop fee is $15.

Monday, April 6, from 6:30pm-9:00pm, is the regular monthly meeting of the International Hypnosis Federation, Orange County Chapter, at the Learning Light. The speaker will be Shelley Nicholas, the founder of the IHF. Shelley's knowledge of hypnosis, marketing, and related fields is HUGE. Do what you can to make this meeting. I promise you'll get information you can use out of it. I've been going to Shelleys' presentations for years and I always get a benefit. Non-member fee is $10.

Psychic Fun Meetup in Lake Forest

Tonight we had a meeting of the Psychic Fun Meetup Group at a new location, the Temple of Light in Lake Forest. Assistant organizer Chase gave a presentation on "The Law of One."

I was very positively impressed with the venue. It's very nicely decorated and furnished, right off the freeway (5 freeway just south of the intersection with the 405), in a very nice neighborhood with lots of parking, and with plenty of very comfortable seating.

Follow-up on Spring Equinox Event

We painted a lot of eggs, planted some fun flower seeds in pots, ate some chocolate eggs, and chatted a lot about a variety of topics. I played a CD of some spring-oriented Native American drum music. So it was somewhat low-key, but overall a very nice evening, and I think everyone enjoyed themselves.

It was a start, and I have a strong feeling that the momentum will build. The next earth-based-traditions event will be May Day, also known as Beltane. We'll be doing both an event on May 1st itself and then a daytime event on Saturday, May 2nd.

More later, but mark your calendar now. I promise it will be fun! Beltane is one of the "fire festivals," so we'll be sure to have a firepit going as part of the Friday night event (which is being co-hosted by Learning Light and the local chapter of the Covenant of the Goddess).

Reading Signs & Omens

Expanding a bit on the last couple of posts . . .

I'm doing a workshop tomorrow night (Tuesday, March 17) at the Learning Light on "Reading Signs & Omens."

This is not a workshop on reading animal entrails or other superstitions.

Learning to read signs and omens simply requires asking for and expecting them, and then becoming adept at interpreting what you observe, and knowing when a breeze is just the result of an atmospheric change and when it is a message with special meaning for you. Foster the belief that the world is a conscious, spiritually-connected one that communicates with us, and experience signs and omens as a way that it uses for communication. Not only will you begin to master an ancient, rare, and powerful method of divination, but you may also begin to discover some of the true magic in the world.

A “sign” is a material or external thing that stands for, indicates or signifies the presence or existence of something else or something spiritual. “The nervous behavior of the animals was a sign to Jane that something dangerous was lurking about.” “Seeing the seagull was a sign to Sailor Jack that land was nearby.” “The sudden scent of his deceased mother’s perfume was a sign to John that she was watching over him.”

An “omen” is an occurrence or phenomenon that portends a future event.

Signs and omens should not be confused with superstitions such as “a black cat crossing your path will bring bad luck,” “walking under a ladder will bring bad luck,” or “breaking a mirror will bring seven years of bad luck.” In these cases, it is one’s interaction with the cat, the ladder, the mirror, etc., that supposedly causes the bad luck. However, simply observing a cat, ladder, or mirror is not necessarily a sign or omen of anything on its own.

We create superstitions when we engage in “magical thinking” in which we impute a causal relationship between two entirely unrelated things - even unrelated by one of those things being an omen or sign of the other. With respect to the above examples, long ago there may have been actual persons who had bad luck after a black cat crossed their path, or they walked under a ladder, or they broke a mirror. Others observed this and, using “magical thinking,” decided that the bad luck was the result of the occurrences with the cat, ladder or mirror, and these superstitions have come down to us over the years.

For another example, one “omen”/superstition that has been observed for many years occurs on Groundhog Day, February 2nd, when a certain groundhog comes out of his hole after a long winter sleep to supposedly look for his shadow. If he sees his shadow, it is regarded as an “omen” that there will be six more weeks of bad weather. In fact, however, in the over 150 years of recordings of the famous shadow-checking groundhog (called “Phil”) of Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, Phil has only been correct 39% of the time. Statistically, simply flipping a coin would likely have yielded more accurate results.

Note also that some weather-related omens, such as a ring around the moon indicating coming bad weather (the ring effects are caused by ice crystals in the upper atmosphere), or physiology-related signs, such as women with masculine hands having lesbian tendencies (actually the result of excessive testosterone received in the womb) have a scientific basis, and thus may in fact be causally related.

Illuminations22 Services Yesterday

It was a fun service yesterday, with guest speaker Yvonne of the Orange County Pagan and Witches Meetup groups. She helped explain things that people had questions about. I think we may be seeing some good new positive energies coming to the Learning Light as we start opening up to those who celebrate nature-based spiritual traditions.

As Yvonne noted, there is plenty of negative misunderstanding regarding those who profess some pagan or Wiccan beliefs, enthusiastically fueled by the media industry, which finds sensationalism helps sell movies, TV programs, tabloid newspapers, etc. Unfortunately, most of the imagery they portray has really little or nothing to do with what the vast majority of Wiccans and pagans are actually doing.

I personally am not a follower of the Wiccan religion, but there is a great deal in nature-based spiritual traditions that I find sensible or that resonates truth for me.

Exploring these concepts and beliefs doesn't mean people have to feel compelled to embrace paganism or Wicca in their totality. I think reality is much less formally structured than most of the main churches would like us to believe. I encourage people to dabble a bit and check out a variety of philosophies, religions, and belief systems, before deciding one is for you or that, like me, you find useful aspects in a variety of them.

Spring Equinox/Ostara Celebration on Friday

On Friday, March 20, from about 7:00pm to 9:00pm we'll be doing a little celebration for the spring equinox, also called Ostara. At this time of year, the world moves from the dark of winter toward the sunny light of summer. This is a time of balance, of equal parts light and dark. Spring has arrived, and with it comes hope and warmth. Seeds begin to sprout, and new life is coming to the earth. It's a time of joy and celebration!

Activities for this workshop include painting and decorating hard-boiled eggs, with fun prizes for the most outstanding designs. Some decorating supplies will be provided, but feel free to tap into your own fertile creativity and bring your own supplies! Some sweets and treats will be provided as well but potluck donations (chocolate bunnies, anyone?) will be gladly accepted! We'll also have some small flower pots and seeds available to brighten your home or work cubicle. All to be followed by a short, fun ritual welcoming the springtime!

Much stuff happening this month.

The Illuminations22 service is at 3:00pm on Sunday the 15th. The guest speaker will be Yvonne of the Orange County Pagan Meetup (among many other things).

I'll be presenting on "Reading Signs and Omens" on Tuesday at 7:00pm at the Learning Light for the Psychic Fun Meetup group. I know some people have a conflict with St. Patrick's Day celebrations, but it's a fun topic so if you can join us then please do!

Then on Sunday the 22nd at 10:30am is the monthly coffee/brunch meeting of the Professional Lightworkers Meetup group. (The links for the Meetup groups are in the column on the left.) We'll be meeting at Kean Coffee in Newport Beach.

I think the presentation I did last week on "The Wheel of the Year" went well, as everyone seemed to enjoy it. It was my first visit to my friend Donna's Heart & Soul Healing Center and Gift Shop in Pasadena, and I was very impressed. Church of Lightworkers Report

Good news. The Secretary of State filed the incorporation papers, so the Church now officially exists. Next step is obtaining the 501(c)(3) status from the IRS. Once that's done, then the California tax board (Franchise Tax Board), which pretty much rubber-stamps whatever the IRS says.

The purpose of the Church is to provide a safe, secure and supportive haven for Lightworkers. We will also be providing training and ordination for qualified persons.

We also now have a slogan for the Church: "A New Age Is Dawning"

And so it is. Too many people have been asleep for too long. There is a revolution of lightworking coming to the world. And I'm very happy to have you with us!

An Ethical Issue For You

Every now and then, someone comes into the metaphysical community who is not really spiritually-connected. They claim to be able to obtain information psychically, or see spirits, or have healing energies, or whatever, when in fact they are simply “faking it” using “cold reading” methods or some similar trick. They believe that they can fool people and make money at it, and for a while maybe they do. This happens, and has happened, and will happen in the future.

But the psychic community is not the only one that gets the occasional fraud. I worked in the legal field for almost 20 years, and I have seen lawyers tell straight-out lies in court, police officers sign reports that they knew were false, and judges make rulings that everyone knew were contradicted by the facts. Famous scientists have falsified research. A new political scandal comes out every week, or so it seems. No field or industry is entirely free of its share of deceivers.

For a more pertinent example, though, we might consider the recent Bernie Madoff (Google search) scandal in the financial investment world. In this case, many people apparently knew there was fraud involved, but looked the other way – even the supposed regulators at the Securities Exchange Commission. And a lot of people lost a lot of money because of it. Lives have been utterly ruined.

Bernie Madoff gave advice and counseling of a financial nature to people who depended on his expertise. Psychics also give counseling and advice to people who likewise rely on their skills and abilities. When we become aware that we have a less-than-honest person in our midst, and that person is giving readings and counseling to people, then ethical questions can arise for us.

Should we expose the fraud? Or should we just quietly begin excluding him/her from our community and events? What should be done about their “victims,” the people who have already received advice and counseling from them and paid money to them? What are our duties and responsibilities to our community and the people who deal with us because they believe in us?

I don’t think that there are necessarily clear black-and-white answers to these questions, and each case can be very different. There are “psychics” who simply give “God loves you” types of readings, but don’t appear to be getting any real psychic information. Are they really causing any harm? If clients are disappointed by these types of readings, aren’t these “psychics” harming the general reputation of our community?

Where do you draw your lines? What are your ethical boundaries and limits?

Ethics is a very complex topic, and we all have different perspectives and feelings. I think it’s very possible for two good-hearted people to come to different decisions when faced with an ethical challenge. I teach an “ethics for psychics” class, and there are always differences of opinions.

I do think it’s important that we consider these issues, though, and feel free to discuss them among ourselves. I do not believe that simply trying to ignore that these situations can and do exist is a solution to them. If we want to keep our community ethical, as well as ourselves, we need to lift up the rocks once in a while and see what’s hiding underneath.

Crystal Reading Class

I was very happy with how the Crystal Reading Workshop went last Tuesday. We had an excellent group of very interested and intelligent people who jumped right in and started using the techniques, and quite successfully, too!

Good Stuff Coming

It's been a very busy week or so, but there's lots of good stuff coming.

This Sunday (2/22) I'll be hosting a brunch for the Professional Lightworkers Meetup Group (http://www.meetup.com/Professional-Lightworkers-Meetup-Group/) at the Gypsy Den in Santa Ana at 10:30, and then doing my Deepening Spiritual Awareness workshop at the Learning Light (http://www.learninglight.net/) at 2:00 that afternoon.

I'll be presenting that workshop again on Sunday, March 1 and Sunday, April 5, at 3:00 pm, but then I'll be taking a break from that to work on developing the Church of Lightworkers services.

I will also begin hosting a monthly workshop for professional Lightworkers. I'll post more info on that when I get the dates and locations set.

Confusing Science

The geniuses at "Live Science" (a website that consistently denies the existence of psychic abilities) are at it again.

Today they've come out with an article - actually a rehash of another article published at Nature Neuroscience - about how intuitive messages may actually be the result of deep-buried memories.

Sometimes when you think you're guessing, your brain may actually know better.

After conducting some unique memory and recognition tests, while also recording subjects' brain waves, scientists conclude that some gut feelings are not just guesswork after all. Rather, we access memories we aren't even aware we have.

"We may actually know more than we think we know in everyday situations, too," said Ken Paller, professor of psychology at Northwestern University and co-researcher on the study. "Unconscious memory may come into play, for example, in recognizing the face of a perpetrator of a crime or the correct answer on a test. Or the choice from a horde of consumer products may be driven by memories that are quite alive on an unconscious level."

As Lightworkers know, psychic abilities are indeed real, and it is possible to get information from the past, the future, or halfway around the world using those abilities.

However, the article does raise a real issue that psychics must consider: whether they are allowing their own memories or other mental "baggage" to come into play when doing a reading.

For example, if I've had a bad experience with dogs in my own past, and I get an image of a dog in a reading for a client, I may be tempted to think of the image as negative or suggesting something negative, while in fact the dog may not actually be a negative in the client's life. If the client is a dog-lover, it might even be a good thing.

This is why it's so important for us to 1) be able to easily access that "clear channel" state, where we can obtain our imagery or other psychic information without any taint or coloring from our own previous experiences, prejudices, or beliefs; and 2) always do plenty of self-examination, so that we are aware of the kinds of mental baggage that we are carrying, to help us guard against it influencing a reading.

This is what sets true Lightworkers aside from those with sloppier mental habits, and gives us the ability to provide clear and insightful readings.

Cheap Scrying Stones

While I was out on my errands today I stopped in at the Dollar Tree to get some water and found some great stones for scrying - black and polished smooth, with some good flat sides. They had bags of them for just a buck a piece!

I found them in the section with candles and vases, with others bags of various colored stones, sand, etc., which are most commonly used for decorative purposes such as arranging fake flowers.

It was an unexpected but happy find!

California Farmers Consulting With Water Witches

While we're in the middle of a small series of rainstorms right now, California generally has been experiencing drought conditions.

As a result, according to this report on Fox News, California farmers have been consulting with water witches (also known as dowsers) to find new sources for water on their lands.

It appears that, when all else fails, people will return to the old ways. They should have just stuck with them in the first place.

Blown Away By Clouds

We got a little break in the rain here and I went out to run some errands, and the clouds were absolutely amazing! The trip should have taken me about 30 minutes but instead I was out for a couple of hours, just looking at all the pictures in the clouds.

Sadly, here in sunny California we don't often get clouds, or we don't get much, so I was thrilled to have the opportunity.

A couple of particularly interesting formations:

* A group of clouds that looked like a long train of covered wagons, like the American pioneers used coming west. The message that I got was that we are moving into uncharted territory, but there's lots to discover, and we'll all be fine as long as we stick together.

* Some smallish but very dark, threatening clouds - and behind them this absolutely gigantic, thick, puffy white cloud, brightly lit by the sun above. There was a stark contrast between the very dark rainclouds and the large bright white pile behind them. I saw this as a very clear message that the threats we may perceive and get focused on are actually dwarfed by the huge, overwhelming power of the light of the Spirit. We need to keep the big picture in mind, and keep things in perspective.

* Another formation looked like people standing on top of a mountain with their hands raised, like they were cheering the achievement of climbing the mountain. This imagery was particularly dramatic because there was a double rainbow coming down just behind the picture - and the double rainbows were actually arching directly over my house. It was really an amazing sight, and I felt quite thrilled by it, like it was a great message just for me. I tried to get some pix with my phone. I'll post them if I can get them transferred onto my computer.

Update: OK, I figured out how to get pictures from my phone to my computer. Unfortunately, it was a rather distant shot and the quality is very poor. The second rainbow is to the left and mostly behind the tree. Here's what I got:

Career-Related Questions Increasing

Like me, I'm sure many readers are experiencing an increase in readings relating to careers, and also of course to money and finances. Relationships are still the subject of the majority of calls, but careers and money is definitely moving up.

This is obviously reflected by the current economic environment and the rising unemployment rate.

The problem for many people is that entire business landscapes have changed. It's not just that they got fired/laid-off from one job, and need to find a similar replacement job. It's that whole industries are changing, and the jobs they were performing are simply disappearing.

So it's not like they can go from being a marketing manager at ABC company to being a marketing manager at XYZ company, because XYZ company and the other companies in their industry are all changing the basics of the ways they do business (assuming that they do continue to do business) and are laying people off, too.

Some big paradigm shifts are going on.

I'm finding that some people not only need guidance towards where they can find new employment, but also the kinds of jobs that are opening up for them and the kinds of personal changes that they may have to make in order for them to make a switch to a new kind of employment.

We know that as one door closes, another one opens. The problem for some clients, though, is that their old perspectives don't allow them to see the opening door.

As a result, I sometimes have conversations like:

Client: "You're saying that I can get a new job selling XYZ? But I don't know anything about XYZ! I've been selling ABC all my life!"

Me: "Right, but this is where I can see your opportunities coming. Look, your experience is in sales, and you're good at it. And, to a large degree, sales is sales. You're going to need to open up to selling a different kind of product."

And the conversation can take a whole different turn as the client begins to consider making those changes, and the personal work that they might have to do to effect those changes in their life. Maybe going back to school for a while, maybe changing the part of town that they work in, and so forth.

I think that this can be a very good thing for some folks, though, as opening to change and doing things differently can help them increase their access to their own intuitive abilities and creativity.

I was reading an Associated Press story today, "Legions facing layoffs turn to parties, Internet":

"Places have hiring freezes. And they have cutbacks. And they have layoffs. There are a lot more people in the job market," said 32-year-old Ana Arrendell, who has been searching for work since August.

At first, she was looking only for a job in her field, graphic design. But as the months have gone by, Arrendell has lowered her expectations. "Right now, I'll take anything," she said Friday as she left a New York City-run office that offers resume-writing assistance and interview training.

Already having given up hope for a Wall Street job making $80,000 per year right out of college, recent graduate David Gunther is getting creative as he tries to expand his business network.

The 23-year-old has begun hanging around commuter ferries and suburban trains, chatting up professional-looking types traveling to areas where executives live. Recently, at an electronica concert — a wildly different atmosphere than at the career services office at his university — he talked to some fans who introduced him to an entertainment-industry manager. Now he's preparing for a job interview with the man.

So again I think that this can be a very good thing for some people, and an opportunity for them to open their minds and start tapping into their own intuition and creativity. If you find that you get career-related inquiries, you might consider trying to share those perspectives with your clients.

For some of them, things are not only going to be different, they're going to be very different. This can be a fun adventure, as they discover wonderful new things about themselves and their opportunities in the world.

If you can get your career-inquiring clients to understand that underlying dynamic, then they may be more open to the guidances that you get for them psychically. And then they can go out and start exploring the new and exciting things that life has in store for them.
